Canada is actively seeking foreign workers and professionals to help grow its strong national workforce. If you are planning to work in Canada, there are two types of work permits you can apply for, i.e. Open work permits and employer-specific work permits.

Open Work Permits

An open work permit allows you to work for any employer in Canada, except for an employer:
  • Who is listed as ineligible on the list of employers on CIC website or
  • Who is involved in illegal activities.

Employer-Specific Work Permits

An employer-specific work permit allows you to work according to the conditions on your work permit, which include:
  • Details like name and address of the employer you can work for
  • Duration of work
  • Location where you can work (if applicable)
Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is applied by a Canadian employer to hire a foreign worker in a few cases. To receive a positive LMIA, an employer must prove that the hiring of a foreign worker will have a positive or neutral effect on the Labour Market of Canada. Also, the Canadian employer must prove that they could not find a suitable Canadian citizen or permanent resident to fill up the required job position.
